What are Events?
Skylight Events are vessel-related behaviors that are relevant to compliance monitoring.
These typically come in two forms:
- AIS-based vessel behaviors
- Vessel detections
Skylight aims to have events in real time, or at least, as near real time as possible. Some events in Skylgiht are available in a few minutes, while others may take a few hours. Generally, the AIS-based vessel behaviors are available in less than one hour. While Vessel Detections are available in as little as an hour, but as much as 6-8 hours.
There are few primary reasons for the delay in events appearing.
- Time required to observe a vessel's movements (AIS data) to identify a behavior (fishing)
- Time for a satellite holding data to find an opportunity to send that data back to earth, such as satellite imagery.
- Processing data - This requires the least amount of time (less than a few minutes)
Below is an overview of the current Skylight Events. The icons below show how the events display in the Skylight web platform, but may look different in other platforms.

Standard Rendezvous | Transhipment, bunkering or other rendezvous behavior. Event based on two vessels, both on AIS, within 250 meters of each other for more than 30 minutes. | |
Dark Rendezvous | A single vessel on AIS with behavior indicating a potential rendezvous with another non-AIS transmitting vessel or other irregular movement | |
Fishing | Fishing activity (e.g., trawling, long lining, purse seining, squid jigging). | |
Entry* | User configured entry of a vessel (first AIS signal received) within a single Area of Interest | |
Speed Range* | User configured speed detection by time or distance within a single Area of Interest | |
Vessel Detections Black icons () indicate a detection that is correlated to AIS. | ||
Night Lights | / |
Ability to detect vessels using bright lights. Globally available nightly, but not effective where clouds and moonlight limit visibility. |

Vessel detections best suited for vessels constructed of metal. Clouds or other weather does not affect detection ability. |

Ability to detect vessels using onboard navigational radar. Not affected by clouds or other weather. |
