Standard Rendezvous
Overview
A Standard Rendezvous event is created when two vessels who are both transmitting AIS are near one another for a certain amount of time. These potential ship-to-ship transfer events can detect Transshipment and Bunkering activities.
Algorithm
Standard Rendezvous is determined by an algorithm based on a set of rules:
- Two AIS signals within 250 m of each other
- Time together is 30 minutes or more
- Speeds less than 4 knots
- Distance from coast is more than 10 km
AIS signals identified as buoys/fishing gear are not eligible for Standard Rendezvous events. In some cases, you may see such events, which indicates a AIS signal that has not yet been classified as fishing gear in Skylight.
Event Details
Standard information
Vessels' information - name, MMSI, Type based on AIS data, IMO, Length based on AIS data
Date and time of the event
Location (lat/lon)
Event history - number of times Skylight has detected this behavior from this vessel
Additional information
Duration of the observed AIS signals alongside one another.
Latency
Standard Rendezvous events are generated within minutes after the 30 minute threshold of two AIS signals (i.e. vessels) being spent alongside one another is met. This is the best case scenario where AIS transmission is strong/frequent.
Average latency is 1 hour.
Irregular/less frequent AIS signals will results in much longer delays (more than one hour).
