Entry
Overview
An Entry Event is generated when an AIS-transmitting vessel enters a defined Area of Interest (AOI). These events will start generating from the time of configuration (it is not possible to generate historical data retroactively).
Why Use This?
- To monitor all (AIS) vessels entering into a restricted zone, like a Marine Protected Area
- To monitor all (AIS) vessels entering a known suspicious area
- To monitor all (AIS) vessels entering into a port
Not a good use case for
- Monitoring all (AIS) vessels into relatively large areas, like Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs)
- AOIs must be <1,000,000 sq km to be able to configure Entry Events
- Viewing all vessels in an area in real-time
- Entry Events only capture the moment a vessel has entered an area. It is not meant for continuing to track vessels in an area, especially if they continuously operate in that area.
- For this use case, consider using Show Nearby Tracks instead.
Event Details
Standard information
Vessel information - name, MMSI, Type based on AIS data, IMO, Length based on AIS data
Date and time of the event
Location (lat/lon)
Event history - number of times Skylight has detected this behavior from this vessel
Additional information
Duration - How long the vessel has been/was in the Area (up to 72 hours)
Exit - The time of a vessel’s exit from the Area of interest (when less than 72 hours)
Area - The name of the relevant Area of Interest

Latency
Entry events are computed in real time and may be available in just a few minutes depending on AIS signal.
Average latency is 1 hour.
